1824 Anton Bruckner – Austrian composer (d.1896); his compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies; unlike other musical radicals, he showed extreme humility before other musicians, Richard Wagner in particular; the ‘Bruckner Problem’ is a term that refers to the complications resulting from the numerous contrasting versions and editions that exist for most of his symphonies.
1892 Darius Milhaud – French composer and teacher (d.1974); a member of Les Six (The Group of Six) and one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century; his compositions are influenced by jazz and make use of polytonality; his autobiography is titled Notes sans musique (Notes without Music), later revised as Ma vie heureuse (My Happy Life).
